Averaged over the transcription benchmarks, its error rate is 3.6% higher in relative terms than that of the BF16 model.

Model Overview

Description

NVIDIA Nemotron-3.5-Transcribe is an offline speech and audio model that processes recordings, together with text instructions and optional context, into text responses.

NVIDIA developed this Speech-Augmented Language Model (SALM) for multilingual transcription, speech translation, contextual transcription, speaker-attributed transcription, rich transcription, timestamp prediction, language identification, and audio question answering. The training mixture also includes a small amount of text instruction following and PII tagging/redaction tasks.

This model is ready for commercial or non-commercial use.

Efficiency

With the optimized vLLM implementation in the Nemotron Transcribe NIM, one RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPU transcribes up to 2,238 seconds of audio per second (NVFP4 with DFlash2 speculative decoding) and returns the transcript of a 30-second recording in 0.13 seconds. These serving optimizations are not yet part of the open-source release; we aim to upstream them to NeMo Speech and vLLM at a later date. The vLLM integration shipped in NeMo Speech on the release day is intended for model development and is expected to be roughly two times slower.

Quick Start

The example below serves this checkpoint on one RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (96 GB) with vLLM 0.32.0 and the latest NeMo Speech main branch. Install both and download the checkpoint as described in Environment setup. The quantized kernels also need nvcc from a CUDA 13 toolkit on PATH.

Prompt Guide

Choose the transcription style with the instruction in the user message; keep the system prompt empty for transcription and translation.

This is an offline model. Internal audio chunking does not make it a real-time streaming ASR service. Language and task support vary; check the language support matrix. See Prompt Recommendations for more tasks and All Evaluated Prompts for the exact benchmark prompts.

License / Terms of Use

Use of this model is governed by the OpenMDW License Agreement, version 1.1 (OpenMDW-1.1). Users are responsible for complying with this license and with any third-party licenses or notices applicable to components included in the distributed model materials.

Use Case

Intended users are developers and researchers building speech interfaces, transcription and translation tools, meeting and media processing, customer-service analytics, and audio-understanding applications. Text context can supply task instructions and vocabulary hints. Speaker labels are intended to distinguish speakers within a recording; they do not establish real-world identity.

Model Architecture

Architecture Type: Other - hybrid Mamba-Transformer mixture-of-experts (MoE) language model with a Transformer audio encoder

Network Architecture: Nemotron 3.5 Lightning hybrid Mamba-Transformer MoE with Transformer ASR encoder and Sortformer speaker encoder

Design: Audio perception module consisting of transformer ASR encoder and Nemotron-3-Diarization speaker encoder, a connectionist temporal classification (CTC) timestamp alignment head, and NVIDIA Nemotron-3.5 Lightning 30B-A3B language backbone. The perception configuration uses a 1,280-dimensional identity connector followed by a learned projection to 2,688 dimensions. Audio features are combined with the text prompt for text generation. The model enables joint multi-token prediction (MTP), with two trained next-token prediction depths using a repeated layer and retaining the existing head. Reusing the repeated layer during inference supports up to eight speculative tokens. A dedicated DFlash2 draft model, a block-diffusion drafter based on DFlash, is also provided as an option for speculative decoding.

Base model: nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Lightning-30B-A3B-BF16; 600M parameter pretrained ASR transformer; and approximately 99M parameter Nemotron-3-Diarization speaker encoder.

Parameter count: The language backbone has approximately 3.5B active parameters. Together with the approximately 800M-parameter joint audio encoder, the model has approximately 4.3B active parameters.

Precision: Weights are released in bfloat16 (BF16), with FP8 and NVFP4 quantized variants.

Language Support Matrix

• ✓ Supported
• — Not specified

ASR means automatic speech recognition; code-switching means using more than one language within a recording. Translation support covers both directions between English and the listed language.

Regional variants listed in parentheses are supported as part of their language.

The matrix covers transcription and translation. Audio understanding, reasoning, and spoken instruction following were evaluated only in English and may not work reliably in other languages.

Quality levels:

• Leading: state of the art or near state of the art out of the box
• Production-ready: production-level quality
• Supported: supported, may need fine-tuning

Inputs

Other Properties Related to Input: The model processes 16kHz single-channel audio decoded to a float32 PCM waveform. The maximum supported audio length is up to 1 hour.

Outputs

Optional structured output: With timestamp capture enabled in vLLM (an open-source LLM inference and serving engine), the response also includes a ctc_timestamps object containing word text, start and end times in seconds relative to the input audio, speaker tags, diarization segments, a mapping from transcript speaker tags to diarization speakers, and an alignment-error field. See Word Timestamps and Speaker Diarization.

Other Properties Related to Output: Punctuation, normalization, speaker attribution, and event annotations depend on the task and prompt.

Our AI models are designed and/or optimized to run on NVIDIA GPU-accelerated systems. By leveraging NVIDIA's hardware (e.g. GPU cores) and software frameworks (e.g., CUDA libraries), the model achieves faster training and inference times compared to CPU-only solutions.

Software Integration

Runtime Engine(s): Training is done with NeMo Speech with the NeMo Automodel backend, PyTorch, and a Lhotse dataloader. AIStore was used for data storage throughout the model development. The recipe uses Transformer Engine attention/linear kernels, grouped GEMM experts, and DeepEP dispatch. Inference is done with SpeechLM-enabled vLLM with NeMo Skills orchestration.

vLLM inference software: vLLM 0.32.0 and the latest NeMo Speech main branch, which includes the quantization-aware plugin. See Quantized Runtime and Environment.

SGLang-Omni inference software: SGLang-Omni 0.2.0 (on SGLang 0.5.22) with the BF16 and FP8 checkpoints; this NVFP4 checkpoint is not supported. See the BF16 model card.

Operating systems: Linux and Windows. Linux runtimes can also run on Windows through WSL2. GGML supports both Linux and native Windows.

Supported Hardware Microarchitecture Compatibility: NVIDIA Ampere, NVIDIA Blackwell, NVIDIA Hopper, NVIDIA Lovelace

The integration of foundation and fine-tuned models into AI systems requires additional testing using use-case-specific data to ensure safe and effective deployment. Following the V-model methodology, iterative testing and validation at both unit and system levels are essential to mitigate risks, meet technical and functional requirements, and ensure compliance with safety and ethical standards before deployment.

Training, Testing, and Evaluation Datasets

Training Dataset

Data Modality: Audio, Text

Audio Training Data Size: More than 1 Million Hours (approximately 1.72 million hours across unique indexed audio examples; 6.53 million hours including repeated exposure)

Text Training Data Size: 1 Billion to 10 Trillion Tokens (5.6 billion unique tokens)

Data Collection Method by dataset: Hybrid: Manually-Collected, Automated, Synthetic

Labeling Method by dataset: Hybrid: Manually-Labeled, Automatic/Sensors, Synthetic

Properties: Approximately 372 million unique audio examples (1.72 million hours) and 5.6 billion unique text tokens. Audio is paired with text instructions and targets: transcripts, translations, speaker-attributed transcripts, captions, answers, and labels; a small share of the data is text-only. The content comprises public and third-party speech corpora (read speech, conversations, meetings, broadcasts, and earnings calls), web-derived speech, sound, and music, pseudo-labeled transcripts and translations, constructed multi-speaker mixtures, and synthetic data such as synthetic PII text and speech. The data covers the 40 supported languages, with the largest share in English, as well as code-switched speech.

Training Data Size Details

Total examples, audio hours, text tokens, unique dataset count, partition percentages, and collection periods:

• Total multimodal tokens (non-unique): 479 billion
• Audio share of multimodal input positions: approx. 60%
• Audio tokens (non-unique): 286 billion
• Text tokens (non-unique, including responses to audio examples): 193 billion
• Audio examples (unique indexed records, estimated): 372,206,279

vLLM

Linux inference runtimes, including vLLM and Hugging Face Transformers, can also run on Windows through WSL2. GGML supports both Linux and native Windows. See hardware, runtime, and operating system compatibility.

Quantized Runtime and Environment

This is a ModelOpt mixed-precision export, with NVFP4 decoder layers, FP8 Mamba layers, FP8 audio encoder, and FP8 MTP head. It requires a Blackwell GPU. The export declares no KV-cache scheme, so set --kv-cache-dtype fp8 explicitly; auto would not select the FP8 KV cache used in validation. --dtype bfloat16 selects the compute and residual dtype; it does not convert the quantized checkpoint back to BF16. Let vLLM detect the ModelOpt quantization from config.json, and do not override it with a different quantization method.

Inference requires vLLM 0.32.0 and the latest NeMo Speech main branch, which provides the vLLM plugin for this model. NeMo Speech main supports the ModelOpt MIXED_PRECISION scheme and resolves the per-layer FP8 map of the audio encoder. Confirm that startup reports quantization=modelopt_mixed and 128 FP8 audio-encoder linear layers.

Install both into one environment with uv and download the checkpoint:

git clone https://github.com/NVIDIA-NeMo/Speech.git nemo-speech
cd nemo-speech

# PyAV decodes compressed audio formats, such as M4A, without a system FFmpeg.
uv pip install --python .venv/bin/python --no-deps av==19.0.2
# vLLM requires OpenCV, which NeMo's dependency settings exclude.
uv pip install --python .venv/bin/python --no-deps opencv-python-headless==5.0.0.93

FlashInfer compiles the quantized attention kernels on first use, which requires nvcc from a CUDA 13 toolkit on PATH, for example export PATH=/usr/local/cuda/bin:$PATH. The first startup therefore takes several minutes; see Kernel Cache and Measurement Warmup to reuse the compiled kernels.

The server listens on 127.0.0.1:8000; use --host and --port to change this. Client concurrency is separate from the 64-sequence engine limit. This profile admits one recording of up to one hour per request (length is in samples at 16 kHz). Validate memory headroom for long recordings under the intended load. The --middleware and --trust-request-mm-kwargs options let requests opt into word timestamps. To disable speculative decoding, remove --speculative-config.

Keep ReplaySSM (--use-replayssm --mamba-backend flashinfer --mamba-cache-mode none) and prefix caching disabled, as in the command above. The first requests after startup are slower while kernels are compiled and warmed up. Keep the optimized FP8 and NVFP4 kernels rather than substituting unquantized or generic PyTorch implementations.

DFlash2 draft model

When lower latency is the priority, the BF16 draft model nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Transcribe-30B-A4B-DFlash2 can propose 15 tokens at once (DFlash15) instead of MTP8. DFlash2 and MTP are alternatives and are not combined.

vLLM 0.32.0 needs a small fix to its DFlash2 implementation; without it, the server can fail when requests finish. Apply it once to the environment:

python - <<'EOF_PATCH'
from pathlib import Path
import vllm
path = Path(vllm.__file__).parent / "model_executor/models/qwen3_dflash2.py"
source = path.read_text()
if "safe_anchor_token_ids" not in source:
    old = "    successors = successor_table[candidate_ids]\n"
    anchor = "            anchor_token_ids[:, None, None].expand(-1, 1, top_k),"
    assert source.count(old) == 1 and source.count(anchor) == 1, "unexpected vLLM version"
    source = source.replace(old, (
        "    safe_anchor_token_ids = anchor_token_ids.clamp(\n"
        "        min=0, max=predecessor_table.shape[0] - 1\n"
        "    )\n" + old
    )).replace(anchor, "            safe_anchor_token_ids[:, None, None].expand(-1, 1, top_k),")
    path.write_text(source)
EOF_PATCH

The fix modifies vLLM source code (Copyright contributors to the vLLM project), which is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0, not under OpenMDW-1.1; see THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.

Then start the server with the following options instead of --speculative-config and --middleware from the command above. Word timestamps are not available with DFlash2, so the CTC alignment is disabled:

--speculative-config '{"method":"dflash","num_speculative_tokens":15,"model":"nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Transcribe-30B-A4B-DFlash2"}' \
--hf-overrides '{"ctc_timestamps":{"enabled":false}}'

vLLM runs DFlash2 only on its V2 model runner, so also run unset VLLM_USE_V2_MODEL_RUNNER before starting the server.

Kernel Cache and Measurement Warmup

FlashInfer's JIT cache uses FLASHINFER_WORKSPACE_BASE/.cache/flashinfer; XDG_CACHE_HOME alone does not control it. To avoid recompiling kernels after a restart, set FLASHINFER_WORKSPACE_BASE to a persistent directory, for example a bind-mounted directory in a container. Keep generated caches separate for different runtime versions and GPU architectures.

Before measuring DFlash15 latency or throughput, prebuild the required FlashInfer XQA kernels with gen_xqa_module(...).build_and_load() and warm up each input length and concurrency level.

Exclude initialization, compilation, and warmup from steady-state timing, and report cold-start time separately. Check that no kernels are compiled during the measurement and that there are no request errors or out-of-memory failures; report responses that reach the token limit and KV-cache preemptions. Set request token limits to fit the task and the available context.

Send a Request

Send audio to the /v1/chat/completions endpoint with an OpenAI-compatible client. The following function covers transcription, reasoning, and word timestamps:

import base64
from pathlib import Path
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(base_url="http://127.0.0.1:8000/v1", api_key="EMPTY")

def ask(audio_path, prompt, system_prompt="", reasoning=False, timestamps=False):
    audio = base64.b64encode(Path(audio_path).read_bytes()).decode()
    messages = [{"role": "system", "content": system_prompt}] if system_prompt else []
    messages.append({"role": "user", "content": [
        {"type": "text", "text": prompt},
        {"type": "audio_url", "audio_url": {"url": f"data:audio/wav;base64,{audio}"}},
    ]})
    extra_body = {
        "chat_template_kwargs": {"enable_thinking": reasoning},
        "skip_special_tokens": False, # keep speaker and event tags
        "spaces_between_special_tokens": False,
        "seed": 0,
    }
    if reasoning:
        extra_body.update(top_k=-1, thinking_token_budget=17408)
        extra_body["chat_template_kwargs"]["reasoning_budget"] = 16384
    if timestamps:
        extra_body["mm_processor_kwargs"] = {"capture_ctc_timestamps": True}
    return client.chat.completions.create(
        model="nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Transcribe-30B-A4B-NVFP4",
        messages=messages,
        temperature=0.6 if reasoning else 0,
        top_p=0.95 if reasoning else 1.0,
        max_tokens=20480 if reasoning else 16384,
        extra_body=extra_body,
    )

response = ask("audio.wav", "Transcribe the following audio.")
print(response.choices[0].message.content)

A dense one-hour conversation can need about 20,000 output tokens. For long recordings, raise max_tokens or remove it, so that the transcript is not truncated.

Transcription uses temperature 0 with reasoning disabled. For audio understanding, enable reasoning and ask a question about the audio:

response = ask("audio.wav", "What is happening in this audio?", reasoning=True)

This sets temperature 0.6, top-p 0.95, top-k disabled, seed 0, a 20,480-token completion limit, and a 16,384-token reasoning budget with a 1,024-token allowance to finish reasoning. Use the task instructions documented under Evaluation Prompts as prompt and system_prompt.

Word Timestamps and Speaker Diarization

The checkpoint bundles the CTC heads used to align the generated transcript to the audio. With --middleware set as in the server command above (MTP8 or no speculative decoding), request timestamps with timestamps=True, together with a speaker-tagged transcription prompt:

response = ask("audio.wav", (
    "Transcribe this audio with punctuation and capitalization. "
    "Include all spoken words and verbal fillers. "
    "Write numbers in their standard written form. "
    "Put speaker tags <spk:0> <spk:1> <spk:2> <spk:3> on the transcription."
), timestamps=True)
alignment = response.model_dump()["ctc_timestamps"]
if alignment["error"] is not None:
    raise RuntimeError(alignment["error"])
for word in alignment["words"]:
    print(word["word"], word["start"], word["end"], word["speaker"])

The response contains a top-level ctc_timestamps object:

• words: word text, start and end times in seconds relative to the input audio, and the transcript's speaker tag.
• diarization: speaker activity segments derived from the audio.
• speaker_tag_to_diarization_speaker: the mapping between transcript tags and diarization speakers.
• error: null on success, or an alignment failure reason. Check this field before using the timestamps.

Timestamp requests accept one audio recording, stream=false, and n=1. Keep skip_special_tokens=false and ask for speaker tags when speaker attribution is needed. A transcript without speaker tags is aligned as a single speaker. Use the diarization segments, rather than word timestamps, when evaluating diarization.

Evaluation Prompts

Use these shortened task-specific templates as starting points. For ASR evaluation, use Exact ASR Benchmark Prompts. The ASR benchmark environment uses vLLM 0.28.0 and NeMo Speech with the FP32 preservation change from PR #16357, which is included in the main branch, with MTP2. For audio understanding, spoken instructions, and text reasoning, use Exact Understanding and Reasoning Prompts, which lists the complete evaluated system prompts; keep the prepared user questions and choices unchanged. For the remaining benchmark families, use All Evaluated Prompts, which contains the complete evaluated prompts and reasoning flags. Replace placeholders with the actual languages, labels, or context.

Prompt Recommendations

For these tasks, keep the system prompt empty. Send the instruction in the user message, alongside the audio.

For questions and instructions, keep the question, choices, and audio in the user message. Use a system prompt for the role or response format:

With the ask function above, pass "Follow the spoken request." as prompt for spoken assistant tasks, and supply the role as system_prompt.

Reasoning Settings

Choose reasoning by task, independently of whether a system message is present. The ask function above provides these presets:

Set enable_thinking inside chat_template_kwargs. The reasoning preset also sets chat_template_kwargs.reasoning_budget=16384 and thinking_token_budget=17408: 16,384 reasoning tokens plus 1,024 to finish reasoning, counted within the 20,480-token completion limit. Both modes use a 65,536-token context. The ask function selects the presets automatically; change max_tokens to override the completion limit.

Generation-Loop Guardrail

In rare cases, the model can fail to terminate generation and fall into a loop. In these cases, we recommend applying the following function once to the final decoded output, before scoring or returning it:

import re

CHAR_RUN = re.compile(r"(.)\1{20,}", re.DOTALL)
BLOCK_RUN = re.compile(r"(.{1,4096}?)\1{19,}", re.DOTALL)

def cleanup_generation_loops(text: str) -> str:
    # Collapse a character repeated ≥21 times to one copy.
    text = CHAR_RUN.sub(lambda m: m.group(1), text)

    # Collapse an exact 1–4096-character block repeated ≥20 times.
    return BLOCK_RUN.sub(lambda m: m.group(1), text)

The reported transcription, translation, and language identification results apply this guardrail. Results generated with reasoning (audio understanding, spoken instructions, and text reasoning) are reported without it: in long answers, it mostly matches legitimate formatting such as Markdown table rules.

This function is adapted from the Qwen3-ASR repetition fix (Copyright 2026 The Alibaba Qwen team), with support for repeated blocks of up to 4,096 characters. It is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0, not under OpenMDW-1.1; see THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.

When to Use a System Prompt

Rule of thumb: leave it empty for transcription, translation, and language ID; add a short system message for a reusable assistant role or answer format. Keep recording-specific vocabulary, questions, and choices in the user message. Empty system prompt means omit the system message.

Reasoning does not require a system prompt; for GPQA, MMLU, and MMLU-Pro, the system prompt only specifies the answer format. For benchmark reproduction, preserve the prepared user text whenever the benchmark supplies its own instructions, even when the request is entirely spoken. The exact benchmark prompts and exceptions are listed below.

Audio Multiple Choice with Option Text

Applies to: MMAU — official full test; MMAR — speech subset; MMAU-Pro — non-music, closed-form questions.

Listen to the provided audio and select the single best answer to the multiple-choice question.

Your final answer must be the complete text of exactly one option, copied verbatim from the supplied choices. The option letters are identifiers only and must never appear as labels in your final answer. If you select option C, output the text after C., not the letter C. Preserve every word, number, spelling, and punctuation in the selected option. Do not paraphrase, shorten, correct, translate, or add to it. Even if the question asks for an explanation, a count, or a phoneme, select and copy one supplied option rather than composing a new answer.

Output only the selected option text. Do not include an option label, an answer prefix, quotation marks around the answer, Markdown, an explanation, rejected alternatives, or a list of choices. If an option itself begins with the word A or contains quotation marks, preserve them as part of its text.

Example: with options A. Heavy rain, B. Snowfall, C. Sunny day, D. Windy, selecting A requires the final answer Heavy rain. The answers A and A. Heavy rain are invalid output formats.

Before giving your final answer, check that it is an exact copy of one supplied option with its option label removed. If uncertain, choose the most likely option and copy its text. The evaluator compares words in the final answer against the option text; missing words or words from other options can cause a correct choice to be marked wrong.

AIR-Bench

Applies to: AIR-Bench — foundation, speech tasks.

Use the provided audio as evidence to answer the user's multiple-choice question. Select the single best supplied option. Output exactly one uppercase option letter: A, B, C, or D. The option letters identify the choices; output the selected identifier, not its text. Example: if option C is correct, the complete final answer is C. The example demonstrates syntax only. Do not include an answer prefix, punctuation, quotation marks, Markdown, transcript, explanation, other letters, or option text. Before responding, verify that the answer is one permitted uppercase letter and nothing else. If uncertain, select the most likely listed option.

MMAU-Pro Open-Ended Questions

Applies to: MMAU-Pro — non-music, open-ended questions.

Answer the user's question directly using evidence from every provided audio clip in their given order. Identify exactly what the question asks, including the relevant clip, speaker, event, comparison, or sequence. Answer every requested part and preserve exact names, numbers, quantities, and temporal relationships supported by the audio. Do not transcribe the clips, repeat the question, invent details, substitute a general discussion, or include unrelated background. If the user specifies a response format, follow it exactly. Give a concise, specific answer first and include only the explanation needed to answer the question. Before responding, check that the answer addresses the actual question and all its explicit constraints.
