This experiment investigates whether the phenomenonâoriginally shared on X (Twitter) by Lyra (@lyraaaa),
the creator of neuron-explorerâcan be replicated in a quantized model.
The phenomenon involves modifying the outputs of just two neurons (a technique known as "activation steering") to cause the Qwen model to undergo a drastic shift,
resulting in harmful or malicious behavior ("Evil Qwen").
In this experiment, we applied an equivalent modification using control vectors in llama.cpp.
Control vectors for other neurons found by the community (alien, Golden Gate Bridge, anime girl) are included as well.
This is a research artifact, not a model intended for practical use. It allows anyone to verify whether the effect persists even after quantization.

Scale 1.0 equals the strength in the table above (the dose in neuron-explorer).
Each tensor direction.L is dose à p50_L à W_down[:, n] / âW_down[:, n]â, where p50_L is the median residual-stream
norm leaving layer L (e.g. 10.35 for L14, 9.74 for L13). llama.cpp adds direction.L to the output of layer L (0-based,
same as HF layers[L]; see build_cvec in src/models/qwen35.cpp).

The original method adds a fixed amount to a neuron's activation. Qwen3.5's down_proj has no bias, so this addition cannot be expressed by editing the weights.

The steering adds a fixed amount to one neuron's activation (silu(gate)·up, the input of down_proj) at every
token, whatever the neuron was doing (Evil Qwen: +22.3 to L14 N8949 and â23.3 to L13 N7956). That is exactly the same as adding
c à W_down[:, n] to the layer's output, which is what direction.L contains. Nothing else in the model is touched.
Later layers react to the change, and that is where the behaviour comes from.

Scaling a neuron (Ãk) could be merged by scaling its W_down column, but it does almost nothing here: on these greetings the two neurons barely
fire (peak 0.14 for L14 N8949, |0.19| for L13 N7956; dataset max â 1). Tested in PyTorch bf16 with greedy decoding:

The effect comes from a push far beyond the neuron's natural range (~20Ã its dataset max, ~150Ã its activation on these prompts), and only an additive vector can do that.

:0.7 is the strength of the control vector. For Evil Qwen, try values between 0.5 and 1.0 (about 0.5â0.7 for Japanese and 0.7â1.0 for English, which needs a stronger push). Higher values strengthen the effect but also make the text break down more easily.
For the other vectors, swap in the file name and start from scale 1.0.

Qwen3.5 tends to repeat itself even without steering. With the recommended sampler above and --presence_penalty 1.5, the steered text no longer looped, up to scale 1.0.
