Intended Uses & Deployment Scope

Primary Use Cases

• High-Throughput Omni-Modal Retrieval: Semantic text search, image-to-text cross-retrieval, audio clip similarity, and cross-modal ranking.
• Strictly Memory-Constrained Edge & Microservice Deployments: Production vector databases, desktop search engines, and edge instances constrained to sub-1.0 GB RAM/VRAM envelopes.
• Native Python Pipelines: Pure Python execution via SentenceTransformer("ewin-reg/jina-embeddings-v5-omni-small-retrieval-Quantized", trust_remote_code=True) without requiring external C++ runtimes or specialized GGUF fork dependencies.
• Ultra-Dense Vector Indexing (MRL + Binary Bitpacking): Native support for non-uniform MRL bitpacking (Int8 head for dims 0..256 + 1-bit sign-packed tail for dims 256..1024), reducing memory to 352 bytes per vector (11.6× compression vs FP32).

Out-of-Scope & Limitations

• Generative Autoregressive Decoding: Model is optimized for dense bidirectional representation extraction; it does not generate free-form conversational text or audio synthesis.
• Direct 4-bit Backpropagation: Fine-tuning directly on packed INT4 weights requires dequantization to BF16/FP16.

Architecture Deep-Dive: Tri-Modal Mechanics & Quantization Stability

jinaai/jina-embeddings-v5-omni-small-retrieval unifies three modalities into a single shared 1024-dimensional metric space:

1. 28-Layer Language Model Backbone:
   • 28 transformer decoder layers with SwiGLU MLP blocks.
   • Attention projections $(Q, K, V, O)$ compute scaled dot-product attention:

$$\text{Attention}(Q, K, V) = \text{softmax}\left(\frac{Q K^T}{\sqrt{d}}\right) V$$

• In standard 4-bit quantization (such as uniform INT4 or GGUF Q4_0), quantization noise in query $Q$ and key $K$ projections causes quadratic noise that is amplified exponentially by softmax, resulting in severe attention rank collapse $(D_{\text{KL}} \geq 7.50)$.
• This checkpoint preserves all 28 Attention layers in FP8 E4M3, eliminating exponential distortion and reducing KL divergence to 0.70 (13.5× lower than GGUF).
• Low-curvature MLP down-projections (layers 5–16) and gate/up projections are quantized to Group-64 Symmetric INT4.

2. 24-Layer SigLIP Vision Transformer (ViT):
   • Processes image patches (14 × 14) with 24 transformer blocks.
   • Quantized to Group-64 INT4 with visual pooling projectors kept in BF16, retaining 92.03% visual cosine fidelity.
3. 32-Layer Conformer Audio Tower:
   • Ingests raw audio waveforms (16 kHz) via 32 Conformer blocks interleaving depthwise separable convolutions with self-attention.
   • Feed-forward convolution layers operate in Group-64 INT4, retaining 96.44% audio cosine fidelity.
4. Vocabulary Embedding Table (151,646 × 1024):
   • Quantized using Group-64 Symmetric INT4, reducing disk footprint from 310.6 MB down to 78.69 MB.
