🌌 Overview & Architectural Breakthrough

THOR-LM-1B is a modern ~915 Million parameter foundation transformer pre-trained from scratch on high-quality educational web text from FineWeb-Edu (sample-10BT).

Unlike standard LLMs (such as LLaMA, Mistral, or GPT) that rely on coordinate-wise AdamW or static spectral Muon, THOR-LM-1B was trained exclusively with THOR:

• 🌀 Riemannian Polar Orthogonal Descent: Enforces unitary condition number ($\kappa = 1.0$) across all 2D parameter tensors via quintic Newton-Schulz iterations.
• 🛡️ Noise-Floor Dynamic Braking: Autonomously moderates step sizes during high stochastic variance regimes based on the mathematical noise-floor theorem $\rho_{\text{floor}} = \sqrt{\frac{1-\beta}{1+\beta}} \approx 0.1601$.
• 🧭 Lie Manifold Commutator Torque: $\Omega = [W W^T, U] = (W W^T) U - U (W^T W)$ eliminates orthogonal representation drift across curved neural manifolds.

Throughout the entire 1,000,079,360 token pretraining run (7,630 optimization steps), zero loss spikes, zero NaN gradients, and zero numerical instability were recorded.

🔬 Scientific Analysis & Chinchilla Scaling Law Grounding

1. Chinchilla Compute-Optimal Law ($D \approx 20 \times N$):
   • For a ~1.0 Billion parameter model ($N \approx 10^9$), compute-optimal saturation requires approximately 20 Billion tokens.
   • ThorLM-1B has seen 1.00 Billion tokens ($\approx 5%$ of its Chinchilla-optimal budget).
2. Emergent Hierarchy:
   • Lexical & Citation Grounding: 100% established. Notice valid English grammar, punctuation, LaTeX variables, markdown lists, C code syntax, and real PubMed reference citations (J Virol 80: 5875–5885. pmid:16731926).
   • Multi-Step Reasoning: Scales progressively as pre-training proceeds from 1B toward 10B–20B tokens.
3. Optimization Stability:
   • The run demonstrates that THOR maintains immaculate condition number preservation ($\kappa = 1.0$) and parameter norm stability across billion-parameter dimensions without explosion or vanishing.

⚡ Train Your Own Models with THOR

To replace AdamW with THOR in your own PyTorch LLM training pipelines:

pip install airborne-thor

import torch
from airborne import thor

# Automatic spectral parameter routing:
# - 2D linear weight matrices route to Polar Orthogonal + Calibrated SNR
# - 1D norms, vectors, and embeddings route to Decoupled AdamW
optimizer = thor(
    model.parameters(),
    lr=1e-3, # Or up to 5e-3 (THOR autonomously brakes under high noise)
    betas=(0.9, 0.95),
    weight_decay=0.1
)

for tokens, targets in dataloader:
    optimizer.zero_grad(set_to_none=True)
    loss = criterion(model(tokens), targets)
    loss.backward()
    optimizer.step()
